當我發現這裡的系統認為globalization是一個錯字時,心中一陣鬱悶。

Globalization is not a new topic to us. When I was small, my mom often taught me that I should have a macro view of the world. That’s true, since we are living in world that is “flatter”, we should change our old attitude towards others since our competitors are from every corners of the world. The book is fun and easy to understand, but also insightful. I know what globalization is. However, the book gave me a new path to understand more about it. Those familiar supporting evidences in the book show that how globalization changed us even in our daily lives.

The part companies and flat world affected me a lot. It states 9 rules that companies can stay in the flattening world. I like rule #4 (The big shall act small) and rule #5 (The best companies are the best cooperators). In fact the world we are having are created by consumers, thus producers should act like small and understand he views and needs of the consumers. Those can act small can have the reputation from the consumers and have a bigger business to stand out from the flattening world. For rule #5, I think that’s a good way of thinking. In the present world, companies will not gain benefit from beating other competitors. With the cooperation of different companies, they can create more products, services for consumers, and together create more profit and return for themselves. I absolutely agree with these two points and I think they are some good rules for companies to cope with the problems of globalization.

The book is a good conclusion of our present world that is facing globalization. It interprets the causes, shows us the evidences, describe their effects, the pros and cons of globalization and what we can do for ourselves. It is a clear and understandable warning to the readers, which reminded us that we all should be well prepared to face the flatter world of tomorrow. In terms of spreading this idea, the book is a great success.

However, I don’t think that the future is totally determined by the quick pace of globalization. I understand that is a mainstream of thinking and that is what we are experiencing at the moment. Wars may break out, more terrorists’ attacks, conflicts between races, the gap between the rich and the poor…The book tends to explain the effects (no matter positive or negative) in terms of economy. Will there be true peace between China and Japan because they are partners of economic production in the future? Perhaps that may be a possible statement, but there’s still a question mark in my mind. Together, the book seems to ignore the potential power of nationalism and discontent between races. Gaps between different cultures may limit the influences of globalization. Some prediction in the book somehow was exaggerated.

Despite of some exaggerated concepts, this book is a very meaningful and useful book for those who are eager to understand the present world, feel the power of globalization, and to prepare himself to be a survivor in the flattened world. I will rate 8 out of 10 for this insightful and perceptive book.
